Favorite Neighborhood Eats
Even though I love ALL kinds of food, I tend to be a creature of habit when it comes to what I order off the menu at restaurants. Whether it's fast food, sit-down, or chain joints, I already know what I want on each menu.
Here are some of my uptown neighborhood favorites:
Bar Abilene: Appetizer: Made at your table fresh guacamole. Main course: Chicken and Wild Rice Burrito--not your typical burrito--presented in eight slices in a ring around your plate.
Calhoun Grill: Best breakfast around! I'd recommend the Salmon Eggs Benedict.
Chino Latino: Hard to choose on this big menu, but if you bring a date with a good appetite, I'd share the Philippine Paella. Shrimp, mussels, calamari...Mmmmm...
The View (Formerly Dixie's Calhoun): For lunch: Smoked Rosemary Chicken Wrap
Yum!: Fairly new deli/bakery in town and I have yet to order anything other than the Grilled Vegetable Panini. Generous veggies soaked in pesto sauce. So Yummy!
Chang Mai Thai: Get the Sweet Green Curry for take-out. It's got a kick to it and makes great left-overs!
McCoy's: Great place to meet friends for happy hour drinks and pizza. All pizzas are great...try the Kitchen Sink, Tuscan Chicken, or Greek.
Chains:
Old Chicago: Nachos Grande. I've been ranking nachos around town for a couple of years now and have yet to find a place to beat these ones! Chicken, black beans, lots of real melted cheese, quality tortilla chips, and guacamole! (The Drink in uptown is a close second with sausage, chicken, pico de gallo, feta cheese and authentic fried chips)
Applebees: Santa Fe Salad--a long time favorite of mine! I don't even know what else they serve at this place!
Subway: I'm sure we all have our favorites here. Mine is the a 6" turkey on wheat with american cheese, spinach, tomatoes, LOTS of pickles and olives, a few jalepanos and spicy mustard. Can you tell I've said that once or twice?
Jamba Juice: When I feel like I am getting sick, I get the Protein Berry Pizzazze with an immunity boost. Even if it's just a psychological healer, I always feel better soon after.
Noodles: Great quick, yet healthy sit-down place. Bangkok Curry is the way to go.
Davanni's: Another long-time favorite--Half Veggie on Whole Wheat.
The following are not in my 'hood, but I highly recommend these two on St. Anthony Main:
Pracna: The Reuben. I'm not normally a huge Reuben fan...but this one is fantastic and I like the cozy atmosphere.
Kikugawa: Order the Dragon. It's not on the menu, but if you don't like to order all the individual sushis, this has a little bit of everything...plus it looks cool and is very filling. And, I always suggest edamame for an app at ANY sushi place.
I'm always looking for new places and menu items to try. Even if you are out of town, tell me YOUR favorites because you never know when I'll be in your 'hood!

That's all I have to say.
Great suggestions, Ash. Obviously, you are not a cheap date. But sometime when you're going dutch, you should come to my 'hood and get some cheap Mexican food at Pepito's. Maybe that just shows how little we get out these days.
Hmm.... some ideas there for WWAD.
Instead of giving you my hot picks in my hood, I'll mention a few in yours (sort of). Try Galactic Pizza for nummy pizza delivered by a superhero. French Meadow for breakfast burritos. Falafel King for, what else, falafel. El Meson for paella. La Bodega for tapas. Can you tell how much I like to eat on Lyndale Ave?
I also love curry from Chang Mai Tai.
The best dining experience I have ever had in my life? La Belle Vie. I haven't been there since it moved to Mpls. from Stillwater, but I hear it is still phenomenal.
Now my stomach is growling so I am heading to the kitchen.
Easy, Eric. My menu items are actually pretty reasonable...only a few splurges.

I've been to El Meson once...and all I remember is they have REALLY good sangria. Maybe I'll lay-off that next time and try the paella!
I have to agree on the Applebee's Santa Fe Chicken Salad. I have had it dozens of times--never disappointed. A lot of your suggestions sound great but I will probably need you along to jog my memory if I'm in your neck of the woods.
Allee--for me, the usual order is Plain hamburger with pickles and onions only. I can usually get this for under $1---talk about a cheap date!
You guys are WAY more sophisticated diners than we are. Here's what's in our 'hood. Culvers, Burger King, McDonald's, Perkins (2), Byerly's, Hoolihan's, Embers, Maynard's, Ruby Tuesday's, and a few other thoroughly American restaurants that end with " 's ". Who says we don't have diversity in the suburbs?
